Seycove Legacy Projects
Seycove Secondary at sə́yəmətən: The Power of a Name Goal: $600
As part of their BC First Peoples learning, Adam and Neko have been exploring the question:
“How can I use my learning to help others see their role in Reconciliation?” Through their learning, they began thinking about the power of names and noticed that while our school was gifted the name sə́yəmətən, “place of good water,” in 2022, that name is not yet reflected consistently in the signage around our school.
The Power of a Name
Adam and Neko would like to change that. Their goal is to update the vinyl signage above our front entrance to more visibly include sə́yəmətən, helping ensure that the name we have been gifted, and our responsibility to understand and honour it, are visible as students, families, staff, and visitors enter our school. They also hope to bring this learning into our Grade 8 Retreat so that our youngest Seyhawks begin their journey here learning about the significance of the name and the place where they go to school.
How You Can Help
Community is one of our core Seycove values, and finding ways for our families to be part of our school, in both big and small ways, is important to us. We hope this project offers another simple opportunity for our community to contribute to something meaningful that will become part of the story of our school.
We are hoping to raise $600 to help Adam and Neko bring this project to life. Like our Turtle Island project, we hope this can be a community effort. Families and community members who are able and interested are invited to contribute a small amount toward this shared legacy project. Every contribution helps us continue making our school spaces more reflective of the history, relationships, and learning we want to honour at Seycove.
Donations can be made through the SEYCOVE LEGACY DONATION LINK. If you choose to make a donation, please be sure to indicate that your contribution is for the “Power of a Name” Project so that the funds can be directed to this initiative. Tax receipts will be automatically issued by NVSD for donations $5.00 and above.
Looking Ahead
This project is one more step in a longer journey. We hope to continue making sə́yəmətən more visible throughout our school while also continuing the work begun through Turtle Island to develop outdoor spaces where students can learn, gather, and deepen their relationship with the land.
Why It Matters
Perhaps what we love most about this project is how it began: two students noticed something, asked why it mattered, and decided they could do something about it. We are proud to help Adam and Neko turn their learning into meaningful action and leave a legacy for the students who will come after them.
Thank You for Your Support
We are deeply grateful for every contribution and for the many ways our families and community continue to support our students and our school. We will share updates as the project moves forward.
With your help, we can continue to grow and honour our gifted name, sə́yəmətən, and create school spaces that reflect our relationship with the land and the community we are fortunate to be part of.
Thank you for the ongoing support to make Seycove amazing!
